Bagatelle for Oboe and Viola, 'To those who Dwell in Realms of Day', by Stephen Gamble.

The history of this piece of music is curious. I wrote it in 2007 for solo violin and submitted it for examination instead of an essay. I had been doing a piece of practical work at theological college for which we had to submit a 'written reflection'. Well, I was fed up with writing essays, I was doing a three year degree condensed into two years, so the essays came thick and fast, so for this assessment I asked if my 'written response' might be in music. To my surprise my tutor, having consulted the rules, said yes. He could not mark it himself, but passed it on to someone in the music department. The music tutor was very critical and I only just got a pass mark, but I didn't really care as the point I wanted to make that music could be a theological reflection had seemingly been accepted.

In editing this music I have taken into account the very valid criticisms of the music tutor, I don't think I would have given the original a pass mark, and I have substituted oboe for violin and added a viola part. The viola part is in honour of the music tutor who I believe played the viola.

The title of the piece is from a poem by Blake, although to be sure the music hardly matches his profundity, I am perhaps just borrowing a bit of his meaning in a playful way.

I would describe the tonality of the piece as two characters easily distracted in search of E flat.

The sounds are computer generated, but I have the score if anyone would like to play it.
