Wardlaw Hill is the site of an ancient hill fort overlooking the Nith estuary. In times gone by the Maxwell Clan from nearby Caerlaverock Castle kept watch from the hill, and so it gave them there war cry, "Wardlaw! I bid ye bide Wardlaw!"

All of which I read from a heritage notice board as an Englishman abroad as I stood on Wardlaw hill. Never-the-less, impressed by the situation and history of the place I determined to write a march based on the rhythm of the Maxwell's war cry when I returned home.
