The Drift, ballad for Solo Violin, by Stephen Gamble

Writer's picture: Rev Stephen GambleRev Stephen Gamble

This Drift was originally a jig, which can be found on this channel, but as time has passed the original idea has drifted in my mind to something longer and more elaborate - a ballad.

Drifts round here are old droving roads. Herdsman drove their cattle to markets along them, or rather they 'drifted' them so they would arrive in good condition. The droves went with industrialisation, but have left their often ancient marks in the landscape. I like the idea of progressing at a drift.
